Comparison of geologic development stages of passive margins reveals insights into hydrocarbon resources.
Comparison is made between the main stages of formation of passive margins and epi-Paleozoic continental plates. Four stages of taphrogeny are suggested for the passive margins of the World Ocean: T – J1, J8 – K1, K2 – ₽, and – ₽3. Sedimentary features of the passive continental margins and young continental platforms are considered. Potential hydrocarbon resources are discussed on the basis of analysis of their evolutionary regularities.
