Field research stations in South Africa are essential for environmental studies but their efficiency varies widely. A panel-data estimation method was employed to assess station performance over time, accounting for both fixed effects and random effects models to ensure robustness. The findings indicate that there is a clear trend in station efficiencies across different regions, with some stations showing efficiency gains of up to 20% after implementing certain management improvements. This study provides valuable insights into optimising resource allocation and operational strategies for environmental research stations in South Africa. Based on the findings, it is recommended that station managers focus on enhancing management practices and utilising data analytics to improve efficiency and sustainability. field research stations, panel-data estimation, efficiency gains, environmental science The empirical specification follows Y=₀+^ X+, and inference is reported with uncertainty-aware statistical criteria.
