Ethics and Governance in AI: Perspectives from Senegalese Societies

This study explores ethical considerations and governance practices in Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Senegalese societies, focusing on the complexities of AI development and implementation. Qualitative research methods were employed through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders including policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders across Senegal. Senegalese communities exhibit varying levels of acceptance towards AI applications, particularly in diagnostic tools. There is a notable preference for traditional medicine practices over AI-driven interventions, despite the potential benefits. The findings suggest that cultural values significantly influence the adoption and perception of AI technologies in Senegal's healthcare sector, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive governance frameworks. Developing inclusive AI governance models that respect local cultures and integrate traditional knowledge is recommended to enhance acceptance and effectiveness of AI applications.
