Quantitative exploration reveals yoga reduces anxiety among Senegal's urban youth, suggesting mental health benefits.
Yoga has gained popularity in Senegal's urban youth population as a form of physical exercise and mental health intervention. This study aims to explore the influence of yoga on their mental health and wellbeing. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in four major cities of Senegal. Participants were recruited through social media platforms and local schools, ensuring a diverse sample representing different socioeconomic backgrounds. A validated questionnaire assessing yoga frequency, mental health scores (based on the General Health Questionnaire), and demographic information was administered. Participants practicing yoga at least three times a week reported significantly lower levels of anxiety compared to those who practiced less frequently (p < 0.05). The findings suggest that regular participation in yoga positively impacts the mental health of urban youths, particularly reducing symptoms of anxiety. Further longitudinal studies should be conducted to explore long-term effects and potential mechanisms underlying these outcomes.
