Retrospective analysis shows that combining MEK inhibitors and bevacizumab may benefit children with tumors without worsening vision.
Lay Summary Some children with brain tumors of the visual pathway do not respond to initial treatment and require additional treatment. This study looked at patients with brain tumors treated with a combination of two newer drugs: MEK inhibitors and bevacizumab. While this study identified that these drugs cause side effects, serious problems were rare, and the combination did not appear to cause more severe side effects. Importantly, none of the children with optic pathway tumors showed worsening vision while receiving treatment and some children had improvement or stopped losing vision, suggesting that this drug combination may be beneficial for certain patients.
