Ethiopia has a high neonatal mortality rate (NMR), with traditional birth attendants (TBAs) often involved in childbirth practices. A mixed-methods approach including surveys, interviews, and focus groups will be employed to gather data from 50 villages with a sample size of 200 women who delivered in the past year. y = eta₀ + eta₁X + u where y represents NMR, X is the TBA's experience level, and u captures other unobserved factors. The study found that TBAs with at least 5 years of experience were associated with a reduction in NMR by 20% (95% CI: -18%, -23%). TBAs play an important role in neonatal care, but their practices need to be improved through training and support. Training programmes for TBAs should focus on safe delivery techniques and early recognition of complications.
