Key Points

  • Mind-body exercise therapies significantly improve symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia, indicating their therapeutic potential.
  • The analysis highlights that Tai Chi stands out as a particularly beneficial modality, showing promising effects on symptom relief.
  • Observational analysis across numerous studies reveals that programs with over 40 total hours of exercise may yield better clinical outcomes.
  • This study suggests the need to tailor exercise intensity to specific symptoms, highlighting a gap for future investigation.

Abstract

The available evidence suggests that MBE is a beneficial adjunctive therapy for improving a range of symptoms in patients with FM. While limited by heterogeneity, our findings indicate that Tai Chi may be a particularly promising modality. To potentially optimize clinical outcomes, programs exceeding 40 hours in total duration could be considered. The choice of exercise intensity may also be a relevant factor to tailor to a patient's primary symptoms, a hypothesis that warrants further investigation.
