Improving the obstetric anal sphincter injury care bundle: a call for inclusive preventive strategies

This article highlights the critical need to optimise the obstetric anal sphincter injuries care bundle to better support culturally and linguistically diverse women in the UK. While the bundle has proven effective in reducing severe perineal trauma, its impact among ethnically diverse populations remains underexplored and may be limited by barriers such as language constraints, cultural stigmas and traditional beliefs. Difficulties in timely communication during the second stage of labour may limit opportunities to encourage controlled pushing and gentle breathing techniques, leading to rushed labour. The article suggests culturally sensitive approaches to improve engagement, including multilingual resources, inclusive antenatal education and community-based workshops. It also highlights the role of family involvement and culturally competent healthcare practices.
