Leveraging AI to reduce operational healthcare costs: lessons from other industries

AWAndrew WongBNBrahmajee K. NallamothuCLChris Longhurst

Key Points

  • AI technologies are underused in healthcare delivery despite their success in other domains.
  • Examples from various industries reveal effective operational AI strategies and their benefits.
  • Implementing a redesign of health systems to incorporate AI can significantly improve efficiency.
  • Effective integration of AI requires a focus on value, enhancing workflow and operational effectiveness.

Abstract

Despite the potential of AI to improve healthcare delivery, healthcare has lagged behind other sectors in its adoption of operational AI technologies. To address this gap, we outline examples of successful AI applications from other sectors, draw parallels to healthcare, and provide a roadmap for health system leaders to implement similar technologies. Effective integration will require tying AI initiatives to value and redesigning our health systems for AI-enabled workflows.
