The paper presents some characteristics of two research projects carried out at the Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague (PACR) related to assessing the risk caused by the release of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) agents in the town environment and within closed facilities. The main aim is to assess the impact on the population and improve protection measures to minimise the consequences of the spread of dangerous materials released due to accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. A short description of the main objectives of two EU projects, namely CHIMERA and UNICOPS, is presented in detail. Some preliminary results achieved have also been discussed. Both projects are coordinated by research institutions in Poland. There are altogether 12 participants in CHIMERA project, while 21 partners are engaged in the UNICOPS project. The majority of countries participating in these projects are Member States of the European Union.
