The Construction Integrated Recording (CIR) was undertaken in accordance with specific guidance produced by HS2, in particular the Technical Standard Specification for historic environment investigations; the GWSI: HERDS; the Route-wide Project Plan for Archaeological monitoring and Construction Integrated Recording, the LSWSI and the Fieldwork Change Control Form. The works adhered to guidance provided by the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) Code of Conduct (CIfA 2014), the Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Excavation (CIfA), and the Creation, Compilation, Transfer and Deposition of Archaeological Archives (CIfA). Headland Archaeology carried out archaeological monitoring, strip and record of all main works ground disturbance activities Archaeological excavation of the PRoW surface and overburden was carried out using a mechanical excavator fitted with a ditching (flat blade) bucket under constant archaeological supervision. Identified archaeological features were hand excavated and fully recorded. A record of the full extent of all archaeological features as revealed in the investigation was made. The CIR demonstrated the presence of fragmented and badly deteriorated structural remains related to the mill buildings and mill race. While no direct evidence of the Mill race furniture were recorded, several wooden beams were excavated and assessed directly underlying the stone walls.
