Investigation reveals that monomer arrangement influences ion selectivity in advanced membrane technologies, suggesting enhanced performance for energy applications.
Polymeric ion selective membranes are applied to advanced technologies in energy storage devices and purification systems, such as fuel cells, batteries, and water treatment. Despite the growing demands, conventional membranes grapple with persistent issues on ion selectivity related to stability and morphology in electrolytes. In this study, we conducted an investigation with the goal of understanding how polarity and monomer arrangement influence the ion selectivity. The membranes adopting blocky monomer arrangement, incorporating both polar and nonpolar monomeric units, exhibited outstanding ion selectivity resulting from degradation stability and ordered ion channels, surpassing those of Nafion in electrolytes.
