Excavation reveals archaeological features in a residential area, suggesting historical land use.
Excavation of the foundation trenches was undertaken using a wheeled mechanical excavator under archaeological supervision. Excavations comprised a single three-sided foundation trench extending north-west from the house. Context recording was undertaken using context sheets and other pro-forma recording sheets and photographs were taken with a Nikon D3200 SLR camera. Plans and sections of trenches and features were drawn on permatrace at 1:10 and 1:50 scales An imported topsoil overlay a layer of loose clinker which in turn overlay the natural substrate; weathered red sandstone. One archaeological feature was recorded in the section of the trench - a shallow pit from which white ceramic sherds and clay pipe were recovered. This is thought to pre-date the inter-war construction of Hill Crescent so was probably in use when the site was still a field and may be related to drainage.
