This thesis reviews authoring systems and describes the creation of OBJECTOR, an interactive courseware tool.
Computer Based Teaching (CBT) software can be divided into two major groups: courseware and computer conferencing. Courseware involves one on one Interaction between the student and the computer. Computer conferencing allows students to interact with other classmates and the instructor. Both groups will be briefly discussed. Authoring systems allow users to create, edit, and replay interactive, on-screen courseware. There are two objectives of this thesis. The first objective is to review several of the commercially available authoring systems. The second objective is to describe the design and implementation of an object oriented authoring system, OBJECTOR. This system provides courseware authors with a powerful and open development environment. A main advantage of OBJECTOR is that the author can use object oriented constructs such as inheritance to add features and tools.
