A study shows differential effects of Proban(R) on tick development in controlled settings, indicating its potential efficacy.
The study conducted involved measuring certain parameters of further development of ticks dropping off mice or porcupines which were live-trapped and held captive. Differences were found in the proportion of ticks which dropped off unengorged from mice treated with PROBAN(R) and those used as controls. Differences were found in weights, length of premoult period and proportion successfully moulting of engorged larvae dropping off mice. Differences were found in weights, length of reproductive period and number of eggs laid per individual for engorged tick females which dropped off porcupines used as controls and those treated with the insecticide. The properties and effects of organophosphate systemic insecticides were reviewed and some recommendations were made.
