Analysis finds seed bank composition reflects field history in arable land, suggesting management implications.
Analysis of twenty-five soil samples, collected from four arable fields in Nova Scotia, yielded a weed seed bank estimate of 8400 to 30,700 seeds per square metre. Seed bank composition reflected the history of the fields rather than the current weed composition. The most prevalent weed species in the seed bank were Plantago major, Gnaphalium uliginosum, and Poa pratensis.
