In the contemporary digital era, smartphones have become deeply integrated into students’ academic and personal lives. While these devices provide convenient access to educational resources, excessive and uncontrolled usage may negatively influence students’ ability to engage in deep learning and sustained academic concentration. The present study, titled “Impact of Excessive Smartphone Usage on Deep Academic Engagement and Academic Concentration among Top 5 College Students at Coimbatore City”, investigates the relationship between smartphone overuse and the cognitive engagement levels of academically active college students. The research adopts a descriptive quantitative methodology and collects primary data from students of selected leading colleges in Coimbatore City through a structured questionnaire. The study evaluates variables such as duration of smartphone usage, frequency of interruptions, multitasking behavior, and their effects on deep reading, critical thinking, assignment completion, and exam preparation. Statistical tools including percentage analysis and chi-square analysis were employed to test the relationship between smartphone usage patterns and academic concentration levels. The results indicate a significant association between excessive smartphone usage and reduced deep academic engagement. Frequent checking behavior, social media exposure, and digital multitasking were found to weaken sustained attention, cognitive absorption, and study discipline. Although smartphones support academic connectivity, their overuse leads to attention fragmentation and diminished learning efficiency. The study recommends promoting digital self-regulation practices and structured academic schedules to enhance concentration and preserve deep learning quality among college students.
