Systematic review maps mycotoxin's impact on breast cancer, indicating essential public health policy needs.
This systematic scoping review aims to map and critically synthesize existing evidence on the role of mycotoxins in the causation of breast cancer. Mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins and zearalenone, are common food contaminants with known carcinogenic and estrogenic properties. The review explores epidemiological, experimental, and mechanistic studies linking mycotoxin exposure to breast carcinogenesis. It also examines exposure pathways, dose–response relationships, and population-level risk factors. By identifying research gaps and inconsistencies, this review highlights the current strength of evidence and areas requiring further investigation. The findings may inform future risk assessment, public health policies, and preventive strategies related to dietary mycotoxin exposure.
