Longitudinal survey analysis shows food assistance improves dietary diversity in rural Rwandan households, suggesting effective programming.
This study examines the effectiveness of food assistance programmes in Rwandan rural areas through a longitudinal household survey conducted between and . A mixed-methods approach was employed, including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to analyse data from 500 randomly selected households in five districts. The analysis revealed a significant increase (p<0.05) of 12% in dietary diversity scores among beneficiaries compared to non-beneficiaries over the three-year study period, with an estimated coefficient of 0.12 from a logistic regression model Ddiversity = eta₀ + eta₁ Dbeneficiary (95% CI: [0.08, 0.16]). The study supports the effectiveness of food assistance programmes in enhancing dietary diversity in Rwandan rural areas. Future policy should prioritise continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure sustained benefits for beneficiaries.
