Abstract

Neolindgomyces is a freshwater fungal genus whose members are reported from Australia and Thailand. In this study, we introduce N. dongtingensis based on collections from decaying culm collected in the midlower basin of the Yangtze River, Hunan Province, China. This represents the first terrestrial record of Neolindgomyces as well as the first geographical report of this genus in China. Morphological observations and multigene phylogenetic analyses of LSU, SSU, and tef 1 sequences support the placement of the new species within Neolindgomyces , forming a distinct, well‐supported clade sister to N. pandani and N. submersus . Morphologically, N. dongtingensis is distinguished by its ascospore size and septation and, especially, by the absence of a gelatinous sheath, which expands the current morphological concept of the genus.
