Abstract

Over the past five decades, India's agricultural growth has relied heavily on groundwater‐based irrigation systems powered by subsidized electricity and diesel. While this model has enhanced food security, it has also created an unsustainable irrigation–energy nexus marked by rising fiscal burdens on state utilities, inefficient energy use, and groundwater depletion. The case study discussed in this article highlights challenges raised by literary research regarding policy implementation, equity issues, and the need for robust monitoring frameworks to ensure the long‐term success of proposed initiatives.
