ABSTRACT This review presents the state‐of‐the‐art knowledge on performances, process, and assessment of modified activated carbon (AC) for ammonia adsorption. It critically investigates the preparation, modification, and structure–activity relationship of modified AC for gaseous ammonia capture, highlighting the factors affecting the adsorption, adsorption mechanism, adsorption theories, techno‐economic performance assessment, and industrial applications. In particular, the influences of carbon‐based materials and operating parameters, microprocess mechanisms, process modeling, isothermal heat and cycle performance, as well as application ways, are determined respectively. Based on an analysis of the existing literature, the gaps in the current research are identified for the modified AC‐based ammonia adsorption. The results provide a positive reference for gaseous ammonia capture technology based on high‐efficiency and cost‐effective AC.
