Archaeological evaluation uncovers post-medieval artefacts in a historic field boundary area.
The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 10no. trenches (Trenches 1- 10), each measuring 30m in length and 1.8m in width. The majority of the trenches were located to provide a representative sample of the site, however Trenches 1 and 2 were targeted on a former field boundary shown on the 1884 First Edition OS map. In November 2024 and February 2025, Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of archaeological works on land at New Fosseway Road, Hengrove, Bristol. A total of 10 archaeological evaluation trenches were excavated in the northern part of the site and archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken during the excavation of foundation trenches in the southern part of the site. A single ditch, containing artefactual material of a post-medieval and/or modern date and correlating closely to a former field boundary shown on the 1884 First Edition Ordnance Survey map, was identified in three trenches excavated in the south-western part of the area subject to archaeological evaluation. No further features or deposits of archaeological interest were revealed.
