Medical therapy normalizes LV function within weeks for transient acute left ventricular dysfunction.
Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy, which mimics acute coronary syndrome, generally has a favorable prognosis with conservative medical therapy and spontaneous recovery of ventricular function.
Supports conservative management despite ACS mimicry; reinforces consensus on favorable prognosis with spontaneous recovery.
Transient acute left ventricular dysfunction (the broken heart syndrome) has been noted in patients predisposed to overtly stressful situations. First reported in Japan, the term Tako-tsubo describes an “octopus-trap” like geometry inflicted on the left ventricle by this condition. Often seen in post-menopausal women, the clinical presentation is difficult to differentiate from the coronary syndromemm caused by atherosclerotic plaque rupture. Medical therapy appears to be the standard of care, conferring a favorable prognosis, with normalization of LV function within weeks.
