This framework reveals emergent behaviors and structural boundaries in scientific disciplines, indicating their characteristics.
Most scientific fields can be understood, at least in part, through a single recursive loop: identify your scale and scope, find the relevant atoms and their interaction laws, then study what emerges. The emergent behavior at each layer produces both the atoms and the effective interaction laws of the next layer up. This framework, the Emergence Loop, offers a unified account of not just how each field works, but why disciplines tend to appear at particular scales, why their boundaries sit where they do, and why different scales produce qualitatively different structure.
