Mixed methods study shows crop yields improved in Southern Nigerian farmers, suggesting effective moisture management technologies.
Southern Nigerian maize farmers face significant challenges in post-harvest moisture management, leading to reduced yields and economic losses. The study employs both qualitative interviews and quantitative survey data to assess the impact of adopted technologies on crop yields, with a focus on identifying key factors influencing technology uptake and effectiveness in enhancing agricultural productivity. A notable proportion (35%) of farmers reported improved yield outcomes following the adoption of moisture management technologies, though variability across different farming zones was observed. The mixed methods study highlights the potential for post-harvest moisture management technologies to significantly boost maize yields in Southern Nigeria, with specific emphasis on tailored interventions based on local conditions and farmer preferences. Policy makers should prioritise the dissemination of appropriate moisture management technologies through targeted agricultural extension programmes, emphasising community-based approaches that foster technology adoption and maintenance.
