Investigating atmospheric Fe supply to the ocean using stable isotope ratios and chemical speciation

MKMinako Kurisu

Key Points

  • The study aims to understand the contribution of atmospheric aerosols to oceanic iron supply and its implications for ecosystems and climate.
  • Analysis of stable iron isotopes in atmospheric aerosols and seawater
  • Observation of iron contributions from anthropogenic sources
  • Assessment of isotope fractionation during high-temperature processes
  • Identified up to 50% contribution of anthropogenic iron in aerosols during summer in the North Pacific
  • Demonstrated that seawater iron isotope ratios do not directly reflect aerosol isotope ratios
  • Highlighted the need to consider biological uptake and other fractionation processes
