Malayalam cinema has long been reflecting the social, cultural, and economic elements of Kerala. From the legendary works of Ramu Kariat to the contemporary masterpieces of directors like Adoor Gopalakrishnan and G Aravindan. Malayalam film industry has consistently portrayed the complexities of Kerala society. This paper explores how Malayalam films have served as a mirror to Kerala's social landscape, reflecting issues like caste, class, and gender dynamics, as well as the state's unique cultural heritage. Through a critical analysis of select films, we examine how Malayalam cinema has both shaped and been shaped by the social and cultural ethos of Kerala. The films of Malayalam cinema have addressed various social issues, including casteism, feudalism, and social inequality, sparking important conversations and debates in the society. Films can effectively depict social issues and influence the audience by portraying relatable stories, raising awareness, and sparking conversations. Through emotional connections and social commentary, films can shape attitudes, break stereotypes, and inspire empathy, ultimately contributing to social change.
