This research examines Veeresalingam's role in enriching Telugu literature through translations, indicating a foundation for future studies.
This research paper examines the contribution of Kandukuri Veeresalingam Panthulu, one of the pioneers of modern Telugu literature, to the development of translation studies in Telugu. The study highlights Veeresalingam’s significant role in introducing new literary forms and intellectual ideas into Telugu through translations from Sanskrit and English literature. The paper analyses how Veeresalingam used translation as a powerful literary tool to enrich Telugu language and literature, bringing global literary traditions to the Telugu-speaking community. By translating works of major Western writers such as Oliver Goldsmith and adapting literary genres like novels, dramas, essays, and biographies, he expanded the scope of Telugu prose writing. The article also explores Veeresalingam’s contributions as a social reformer, writer, translator, and editor who utilized literature as a means to challenge social evils and promote progressive ideas such as women’s education and social reform. His translations of literary, scientific, and philosophical works helped modernize Telugu prose and played a crucial role in shaping the Telugu Renaissance. The study concludes that Veeresalingam’s efforts laid the foundation for translation studies in Telugu literature and opened pathways for intercultural literary exchange, thereby establishing him as a pioneering figure in the evolution of modern Telugu literary discourse.
