Key Points

  • The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness and benefits of new technologies for wrong-way driving countermeasures in Europe.
  • Conducted a systematic review of existing literature on wrong-way driving and technological solutions.
  • Analyzed data on crash reduction from intelligent technological solutions like RRFBs (Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons).
  • Assessed feasibility and implementation of these solutions in the European context.
  • Intelligent solutions, particularly RRFBs, show strong evidence of reducing crashes in the U.S.
  • Proposed a tailored countermeasure based on identified effective technologies for European roads.

Abstract

Intelligent Technological Solutions, particularly RRFBs, have been extensively and successfully tested on United States roads, with proven positive effects for crash reduction. Given their relative ease of implementation, such solutions are the most promising for addressing and mitigating the phenomenon of wrong-way driving in the European road context. Based on the findings of this study, a proposal for a tailored countermeasure suitable for implementation within the European countries was proposed.
