Registration of ‘TifTB’ identifies a high oleic peanut cultivar with disease resistance, suggesting improved yield potential for farmers.
Abstract ‘TifTB’ (Reg. no. CV‐161, PI 708603) is a runner‐type peanut ( Arachis hypogaea L. subsp. hypogaea var. hypogaea ) cultivar released by the USDA‐ARS and the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station in 2025. TifTB was developed at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA. TifTB is a high oleic acid, runner market‐type cultivar that also has resistance to white mold ( Athelia rolfsii ) and to tomato spotted wilt caused by Tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV). The original population was developed by crossing ‘Georgia 07W’ × MAS 7. MAS 7 is a high oleic, nematode‐susceptible breeding line selected from the cross of ‘Florida‐07’ × (‘Tifguard’ × Florida‐07). Marker‐assisted selection was used in the development of TifTB to select for the high oleic to linoleic ratio characteristic. TifTB exhibited a higher level of resistance to white mold compared with ‘Georgia‐12Y’, the standard resistant check. Farmers who want to grow a high oleic, runner‐type peanut cultivar with resistance to white mold and TSWV also need the highest yield and grade for maximum economic return. When tested in fields without severe white mold pressure, TifTB exhibited yields that were at least similar to those of other currently grown peanut cultivars. When tested in fields with severe white mold pressure, TifTB exhibited a yield at least equivalent to that of Georgia‐12Y and significantly higher than that of susceptible cultivars. TifTB has consistently exhibited high grades.
