This case study demonstrates a method for performance analysis in tennis, enhancing data collection and statistical evaluation.
In the context of performance analysis in tennis, quantified indicators are commonly referred to as match statistics or "stats," and they are utilized in both research and practice. There is, however, no systematic or specific methodology is generally available for data collection or research data creation aimed at performance analysis in tennis matches. In this study, we aimed to present a series of processes as a case study, from data collection methods and statistical analysis to player feedback and the creation of research data, focusing on tournaments subject to the Japan Tennis Association rankings.First, we demonstrated a method for entering the type and placement of shots into a spreadsheet file while watching a live match or a match video. The spreadsheet file used for this method automatically aggregates key performance indicator values. Then, detailed research data were created using the statistical software R, and the visual feedback generated by this script was presented as an example in the figure .Using these methods, data were collected in an actual tournament with procedures ensuring validity and reliability. From this, we were able to create research data from 99 matches, 6,376 points, and 40,239 shots. These data have been used in previous research and will be utilized in future studies. We also provided feedback to the players on key performance indicators.Using this method, we expect to enhance performance analysis across various competitive-level players and contribute to the advancement of research and improvement of competitive levels in Japan.
