This article explores the evolution of gaming consoles, focusing on Nintendo’s unique strategies and industry transformations.
This article examines the historical evolution of video game consoles, tracing their technological, cultural, and industrial development from the early generations of gaming systems to contemporary hybrid platforms. Particular attention is given to the strategies adopted by major companies such as Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, as well as to the broader transformations of the video game industry. The study explores how technological constraints, design philosophies, and market competition shaped the development of console hardware, storage media, and player experiences. It also discusses the growing influence of mobile gaming, digital distribution, online services, and the increasing convergence between consoles and personal computers. Special emphasis is placed on Nintendo’s design philosophy and its alternative approach to console development, culminating in the hybrid concept introduced with the Nintendo Switch. Rather than competing primarily through hardware power, this strategy focused on new ways of playing and social interaction. Originally published in 2016, this revised and expanded version updates the historical analysis to include later developments in the industry and reflects on the ongoing transformations affecting the relationship between consoles, personal computers, and other gaming platforms.
