Investigates Jeju lava seawater treatment's effect on bioactive compounds in Schisandra chinensis, suggesting enhanced functional applications.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Jeju lava seawater treatment on the phytochemical composition and biological activities of Schisandra chinensis extract (SE). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that the Schisandra chinensis lava seawater extract (SLE) revealed elevated levels of schisandrol A and schisandrol B compared to SE. In antioxidant assays, SLE exhibited significantly stronger radical scavenging activity. SLE showed enhanced anti-inflammatory properties by more effectively inhibiting nitric oxide production and SLS-induced responses in RAW 264.7 and HaCaT cells, respectively. Furthermore, SLE markedly increased hyaluronic acid production, which was not observed with SE. These results indicate that treatment with Jeju lava seawater enhances the bioactive compound content and functional efficacy of Schisandra chinensis extract, suggesting its potential as a high-value natural ingredient for functional applications.
