ABSTRACT When the salt concentration of the tear layer is reduced, the epithelium of the excised rabbit cornea begins to thicken within a few seconds. When the salt concentration is increased, the epithelium thins. After about six minutes a steady‐state is reached. It is shown that the epithelium can increase in thickness 50 per cent if the salt concentration is changed from 1.0% NaCl to 0.65% NaCl. Although this appears remarkable, it is a response which the epithelium shares with other living animal cells.
