Quasi-experimental design assesses efficiency improvements in Nigerian district hospitals, suggesting optimal resource use.
District hospitals in Nigeria face challenges in delivering efficient healthcare services due to resource constraints and varying operational standards. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews was employed. The study utilised a novel econometric model to estimate efficiency scores (Y = β0 + β1X1 + β2X2 + ε; where Y is the output measure, X1 and X2 are input measures, and ε is the error term). The econometric analysis revealed a significant improvement in efficiency gains by up to 35% when inputs were optimised according to the model. This study provides a robust framework for district hospitals to enhance their operational efficiencies through targeted resource allocation and process improvements. Health policymakers should prioritise investments in data collection and analytical tools, alongside capacity building programmes for healthcare managers.
