Reflecting upon years of experience as a music educator and music psychology researcher through an ethnographic lens, this article illuminates the intrinsic therapeutic nature of music. Following an exploration of music’s macro-evolutionary roots in our species and its micro-evolutionary unfolding across the individual lifespan, the author offers personal examples of her natural affinity for and applications of music, substantiated by evidence-based research. Illustrating inherently therapeutic elements observed in her own musical development and in the experiences of her students and study participants – ranging from emotional regulation to creative self-expression – the article reveals the potent capacity of musical engagement as a salve and inspirational tool for reflection, feeling, processing and expression, ultimately fostering healing and well-being. Celebrating the inherent accessibility and enjoyment of popular music, the author’s experiences educating and making music with youth underscore its power for development and healing.
