This thesis investigates the stakeholder engagement practices of International Oil Companies (IOCs) in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The study aims to examine the descriptive reality of stakeholders' engagement strategies in the Niger Delta region and the outcome of the CSR initiatives of IOCs in Nigeria's oil/gas environment, specifically in the Niger Delta, that transcends the instrumental approach adopted in Corporate Community Engagement (CCE) Prevalent historical mistrust observed in the relationship between IOCs and their host community has created a bridge requiring rebuilding of trust to achieve CSR outcomes initiated to tackle socio-economic issues identified in the community. Decades of environmental degradation, economic exploitation, and neglect have eroded trust, resulting in complications in relationships. By adopting a qualitative approach, this study used data from semi-structured interviews and secondary sources to examine the operationalisation of IOCs' current Corporate Community Engagement (CCE) strategies to deploy CSR initiatives. The research also identifies the limitations in initiating definitive causal mechanisms connecting contextual factors to engagement processes. Despite the identified challenges, the researcher extends Wood and Carroll's integrated model, emphasising productive dialogue, incorporating sustainability indices in CSR initiatives, and promoting inclusiveness in stakeholder engagement with the host community. This study contributes to other scholarly work on stakeholder engagement through CSR initiatives and encourages incorporating sustainability concerns in projects deployed in the host community. Also, valuable suggestions are proffered for the Federal Government, community relations managers of IOCs, and community leaders to improve stakeholder engagement in the Niger Delta region and similar climes globally.
