This research demonstrates neuroanatomical links of acupoints ST36-ST41, suggesting improved accuracy for acupuncture practices.
Objective: The goal of this research was to increase the precision of acupoint locations and standardize the neuroanatomical targets of acupoints ST36 through ST41 in relation to the deep peroneal nerve (DPN). Materials and Methods: The acupoints and neuroanatomical targets were examined through a combination of cadaveric dissections, electrostimulation of the acupoints, reference to classical and modern acupuncture texts, as well as to modern anatomical research. Results: The examined acupoints were associated with motor branches along the DPN in the lower leg, with the exception of ST40, which was associated with a cutaneous branch of the superficial peroneal nerve. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the precise association of acupoints on the lower stomach channel with targets on the DPN pathway. The findings facilitate standardization of acupoint locations for future research and clinical practice and consequently help to improve inter-practitioner reliability.
