This framework proposes a new theory of adaptive capacity in evolution, highlighting the importance of multi-level interaction.
The Extended Evolutionary Synthesis has established that evolutionary causation operates across multiple biological levels — genetic, epigenetic, developmental, ecological, and cultural. What it has not provided is a formal theory of why multi-level interaction is multiplicative rather than additive: why removing any single level collapses adaptive capacity entirely, regardless of the other levels' magnitude. This paper proposes KAVI Space — a formal framework in which adaptive Insight I = K × A × V — as that theory. K (Knowledge) is the organism's accumulated adaptive information; A (Awareness) is the metacognitive calibration function, instantiated at the evolutionary scale by the environment; V (Vulnerability) is genuine structural openness to independent external challenge, instantiated by society. The Zero Product Principle — I = 0 when any axis reaches zero — predicts mechanistically distinct failure modes at each level, empirically distinguishable from additive alternatives. We show that the Price equation, multi-level selection theory, and evolutionary game theory each capture one projection of the full KAVI structure. The recursive nesting of cellular I into evolutionary K provides the formal basis for why EES mechanisms are architecturally necessary rather than theoretically equivalent. Five pre-specified predictions distinguish the multiplicative from the additive model.
