Clinical perspectives highlight parent-physician relationship challenges in NICU, indicating support from primary care pediatricians is crucial.
In Reply.— We agree very much with Dr Narkewicz that the primary care pediatrician should be a valued member of the neonatology team. We did not emphasize this point because: (1) in families whose first born is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the relationship with the primary care pediatrician may be limited, (2) the parent-physician relationship in the NICU was the focus of the paper, and (3) given regionalization of NICU services, the primary care pediatrician may not be readily available to the family and staff.
