Clinical trial shows penicillin effectively cures streptococcal infections in children, preventing complications such as nephritis.
One thousand one hundred seventy-five cases of streptococcal infections in children were treated with a single dose of 600,000 units of a long-acting repository form of pencillin (N,N-dibenzylethylenediamine dipenicillin G). This dosage cured the acute infection promptly and prevented recurrences or complications in 94 per cent of patients. No clinically recognized cases of rheumatic fever or nephritis were seen in this series. No severe reactions were noted.
