Comparative empirical study evaluates code generation quality in UAV systems using Simulink and SCADE, suggesting tool selection implications.
To address the ambiguity regarding capability boundaries, applicable scenarios, and generated code quality of modeling and code generation tools Simulink and SCADE, this study conducted a comparative empirical study. First, a flight control system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) was designed and implemented using a model-driven approach, and the code automatically generated by Simulink and SCADE was deployed to a UAV platform for verification. Second, the study compared the differences between the two tools in modeling expression and code generation using multi-dimensional metrics and evaluated the quality of the generated code via static analysis tools. Finally, based on the empirical data, tool selection suggestions and a metric selection matrix are provided. The results indicated that Simulink possessed advantages in usability, interface richness, and code execution efficiency, making it suitable for rapid prototyping and algorithm verification. Conversely, the code generated by SCADE complied with the DO-178B safety standard and performed better in terms of readability, reliability, and maintainability, making it suitable for the engineering implementation of high-safety-level systems.
