Bioelectrical impedance analysis detects pharynx motion in swallowing, indicating a novel measurement technique.
Application of a bioelectrical impedance analysis was proposed to a system measuring easily and conveniently the pharynx motion in swallowing. The system was configured as supplying an alternating current to the neck of a subject and outputting the corresponding voltage. The relation was investigated between the characteristic voltage (impedance) change obtained in swallowing through the system and the motion of the tissue or organ performing the swallowing process, with the impedance change in the process being observed elementally. This testing approach was demonstrated to have a possible detection of the pharynx motion focusing on the hyoid bone.
