Sailing is a competition in which sailors compete for places by sailing a predetermined course on a yacht powered by the wind caught in the sails. During races, natural conditions change constantly, so course selection and yacht steering depend on the athletes' instincts. Top-level athletes use real-time data in training to analyze wind forecasts and sea conditions in detail to improve their performance, but it is difficult for students and amateur athletes to use these expensive systems, and there is no established method for efficiently improving race times and training athletes. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the effects of the sail and human movement on sailing speed and to establish indicators for quantifying competitive skills easily. In this study, upwind sailing skills in sailing competitions were quantitatively evaluated. Specifically, we analyze yacht position, wind direction, and wind speed data measured by GPS and wind tracker, calculate the sailing speed, sailing angle, and Velocity Made Good (VMG) in the start-first mark section. From the results, it was suggested that the first-place yacht not only had a higher average sailing speed but also had less variation in sailing speed and was able to convert wind power into propulsion more efficiently. In addition, a positive correlation was found between arrival order and sailing speed, as well as between arrival order and VMG.
