The Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s (AFSC) Fisheries Monitoring and Analysis (FMA) Division is responsible for training, in-season support, and quality control of observers who collect catch data on board fishing vessels and at shoreside processing plants. The FMA Division undertook a comprehensive project to curate and manage legacy data associated with the Alaska Marine Mammal Observer Program (AMMOP). These data documented marine mammal and bird interactions, as well as catch associated with the commercial salmon gillnet Alaskan fisheries. The work involved data standardization, quality assurance, and migration to a modern infrastructure. The work increased the integrity, accessibility, and utility of the AMMOP data, and preserved the historical record for contemporary scientific research.
