Discusses changes in university education, focusing on the first-year chemistry curriculum across Europe, indicating significant impacts from new initiatives.
Two vital initiatives, the Bologna Declaration and the ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), are fundamentally changing the nature of education across Europe. The overall goals of these changes are to implement a unified system of transferring credits and grades at universities across the continent by the year 2010. In this paper, I discuss these initiatives, as well as their impacts on the first-year chemistry curriculum in Europe. Implications for the first-year chemistry curriculum beyond the continent as a result of the sea changes in educational systems are discussed.
