Lab experience demonstrates lead detection in environmental samples using modified electrodes, indicating improved electrochemical sensing techniques.
This manuscript describes an introductory electro-analytical lab where carbon nanotubes (CNT) are used to act as a working electrode. The CNTs are one of the most highly studied nanomaterial’s, which may be utilized, in various environmental applications. This lab focuses on students’ utilizing the technique of Square Wave Anodic Stripping Voltammetry to detect heavy metals such as lead with a carbon working electrode modified with CNT dispersed with poly-3-hexylthiophene. This lab has expanded our undergraduate students’ understanding of CNT materials modified with a polymer such as poly-3-hexylthiophene and how to utilize the composite electrochemistry as a sensor.
