Exploration of LEDs' wavelengths finds an engaging alternative to flame tests in classrooms, suggesting effective learning methods.
An exploration of the wavelengths of LEDs was developed as a safer alternative to the flame test for introducing and reinforcing the concepts of and relationships among wavelength, frequency and energy in light. Red, yellow, green and blue LEDs were analyzed using handheld spectroscopes. This activity was designed for use in elementary science classes but could be adapted for use in the middle or high school science classroom. A materials list, detailed instructions regarding the wiring and construction of the LED boxes and student versions of the activity handout have been included as supporting information.
