Undergraduate laboratory project identifies and titrates an amino acid using NMR, reinforcing key chemistry concepts.
This paper outlines an undergraduate biochemistry laboratory project involving the identification and titration of an alpha amino acid by Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (FT NMR). This project is carried out early in the semester and is useful for reviewing and giving the students more extensive hands-on use of the 1H NMR. It also serves to lay the groundwork for more advanced NMR projects and to reinforce the concepts of acid/base chemistry and titration as they relate to amino acids, peptides, and proteins. All of these concepts are being covered simultaneously in the lecture part of the course.
